Key Bible Verse: Romans 1:20
Age Group: Ages 5–11
Main Point: We believe God exists because of what we see in creation, the order of the universe, and what the Bible teaches us about Him.
1. Opening: How Do You Know? (5 minutes)
Teacher says:
“Today we're going to answer a very important question: How do Christians know that God exists?
Have you ever seen God standing in front of you? Can you touch God with your hands? No! But does that mean God isn't real?
Let me ask you something. Have you ever seen the wind?”
Allow the children to respond.
“You cannot see the wind itself, but you can see what it does. You can see leaves blowing, trees bending, and flags waving. You know the wind is real because you can see its effects!
In a similar way, Christians believe we can see evidence of God through the world He created. We cannot see God with our eyes right now, but we can see many things that point us toward Him.”
Ask the children:
- What are some things you cannot see but know are real?
- Can you see the wind? How do you know it's there?
- What are some things in nature that make you wonder about God?
2. The Bible: Three Reasons Christians Believe in God
Reason 1: Look at Creation!
Bible Verse: Romans 1:20
“For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities ... have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.”
Teacher says:
“Look at the world around you! We have mountains, oceans, flowers, animals, stars, and people. Christians believe that the beauty and complexity of creation point to a Creator.
Think about a beautiful painting. If you saw a painting hanging on a wall, would you think the paint splashed itself onto the canvas and accidentally made a picture? Probably not! You would think an artist made it.
In the same way, Christians believe that the world points to God, the One who created it.”
Ask: What is your favorite thing God created?
Reason 2: Look at the Order of the Universe!
Bible Verse: Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Teacher says:
“Our universe is amazing! Earth travels around the Sun. The Moon moves around Earth. Plants grow, animals have babies, and our bodies have many parts that work together.
Christians see the order and complexity of the universe as evidence pointing toward an intelligent Creator.
Imagine finding a working watch on the ground. The tiny gears and moving parts work together to tell time. You would naturally wonder who made it!
The universe is much more amazing than a watch. Christians believe its order and beauty point us to God.”
Ask: What is something in the universe that amazes you?
Reason 3: Learn What the Bible Says!
Bible Verse: Hebrews 11:6
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists.”
Teacher says:
“Christians believe God exists because the Bible tells us who He is and what He has done. The Bible tells us about creation, God's love, His promises, and Jesus coming into the world.
Christians also believe that Jesus really lived, that He died on the cross, and that He rose from the dead. The Christian faith is built on the Bible's testimony about these events.
Faith doesn't mean we have to know every answer to every question. It means we trust God, learn about Him, and seek the truth.”
Ask: Where can we learn about God and what He has done?
3. Object Lesson: The Invisible Wind (5 minutes)
Supplies: A small electric fan and a pinwheel, or a paper strip.
Teacher says:
“Let's do an experiment! We can't see the air moving, but watch what happens when I turn on this fan.”
Turn on the fan and let the children watch the pinwheel spin or the paper move.
“Did you see the air itself? No! But you saw what the moving air did.
Christians believe there are reasons to believe in God even though we cannot see Him with our eyes. We see the world He made, we see the order and beauty of creation, and we learn about Him through the Bible.
Now, here's something important: the wind experiment doesn't prove everything about God. It helps us understand how we can recognize something through its effects, even when we cannot see it directly.”
Lesson question: What did the fan help us understand?
Expected answer: We can sometimes recognize something by seeing what it does.
4. Game: Creation Detectives! (5 minutes)
Tell the children they are now “Creation Detectives.” Read each clue and let them guess the answer.
I shine in the daytime and help plants grow.Tap to reveal the answerI have wings and can fly through the sky.Tap to reveal the answerI am full of stars, planets, and galaxies.Tap to reveal the answerI grow from a tiny seed into something much bigger.Tap to reveal the answerI tell Christians about God, Jesus, and God's promises.Tap to reveal the answer
After the game, ask: “How can the things we discovered help Christians think about God?”
Explain that Christians see creation as evidence pointing toward its Creator.
5. Everyday Application: How Can We Learn About God?
Teacher says:
“You don't have to wait until you're an adult to learn about God. You can begin today!
Here are three things you can do this week:
- Look around. Notice the trees, birds, stars, and other things in creation. Think about what they teach you about God's creativity.
- Read the Bible. Ask a parent, teacher, or trusted Christian to help you learn what the Bible says about God.
- Ask questions. If you wonder about God, don't be afraid to ask. Christians can keep learning, studying, and seeking answers.”
Remind the children that Christians do not have every answer, and having questions does not mean they cannot have faith.
6. Review Questions
- What are three reasons Christians believe God exists?
- What does Romans 1:20 teach us about creation?
- What did the fan and pinwheel demonstrate?
- Where can we learn about God?
- What can you do this week to learn more about God?
7. Closing Prayer
“Dear God, thank You for creating the wonderful world around us. Thank You for the Bible and for sending Jesus. Help us to see the beauty of Your creation, learn more about You, and have the courage to ask questions when we don't understand something. Help our faith grow as we learn to trust You. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
Remember This!
Christians believe God exists because creation points toward a Creator, the universe displays remarkable order and complexity, and the Bible teaches us who God is.
“The heavens declare the glory of God.” — Psalm 19:1
