Proverbs 3:5-6 a Lesson to Teach Children to Trust God

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy paths.” KJV

What do these verses mean?
First, discuss what trust is, types of people we trust, and how trust is earned. For example, we trust police officers to protect us, and help us if we are in trouble. We trust doctors to make us feel better when we are hurt or sick.

Discuss how people who are older, or have more experience in a certain area, may have more knowledge than we do. When this is the case, it is wise to listen to them. For example, our moms and dads know what is best for us like eating healthy foods, getting plenty of rest, finishing our homework, etc. Our teachers know the subject they are teaching us, and therefore we should ask them questions, and listen to their lessons.

Activity: Have students look at a road map. Have students point out straight roads and windy ones. Ask students which road is easier to travel on. Discuss the parallel between a straight road on a map, and a straight road in life, free from obstacles and detours.

Explain how all the students came to class today trusting that their teacher would be there, a lesson would be taught, and they would be in a safe environment to learn. It was expected, because the teachers have our trust. It is the same with God. We can go to Him with any need, and trust that because He is God, He knows what is best for us, and He will guide us in our lives, making our paths straight.

Ask: What types of things can we trust God for? (Let students answer. If needed, guide with: forgiveness, peace, wisdom, etc.)

Ask: How do we present our requests to God, or ask Him for advice? (Let students answer, and lead them to the answer of “prayer.”)

Pray together thanking God for being there for us, directing our paths.

Lead students in prayer to accept Jesus, if they haven’t before.
