sunday school – Kids Ministry Resources http://kidsministryresource.com Sat, 19 Jan 2019 02:18:20 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.3 How to Promote a Sunday School Program http://kidsministryresource.com/index.php/2019/01/19/how-to-promote-a-sunday-school-program/ Sat, 19 Jan 2019 02:18:20 +0000 http://kidsministryresource.com/?p=125 Good promotion of Sunday School classes or Junior Church is essential to maintaining its growth. The goal of promotion is to inform and excite. Keeping current and prospective students aware of events and activities, if done properly, can build tremendous excitement in your children’s ministry. Keep in mind that no amount of promotion will help if the children’s ministry is dull and boring. The absolute best promotional ad you have is a fun and exciting ministry that the kids anticipate coming to; they will spread the word to their friends. Note: I will continue to add How To’ s on children’s ministry; check my resources and articles frequently.

    1. Step 1
The simplest form of promotion begins in the church. If your church has a bulletin, use inserts to notify parents of up-coming lesson series, activities and events. Informed parents are more likely to make sure their kids are in class if they are aware of what is being taught. It assures them that the time is being used well for the benefit of their children. All children’s ministers would like to have the full support of the parents; informing bulletin inserts will help.
    2. Step 2
Another in church promotion you can use is a short power point presentation. One that worked well for me included pictures of the students in class, smiling and being actively involved. It was set to the song “Friends” by Michael W. Smith. After every couple of student pictures I included a slide with a verse on friendship or children. The last slide Stated “Kidz J.A.M., Where Friends become Friends Forever.” then asked “Are Your Children Missing Out?”. Again, if you are not familiar with making power point presentations, ask around your church.
    3. Step 3
Send out postcards! Nothing excites a child more then receiving mail. Send postcards for any reason you can find. Birthdays, Missing You, Get well, Hope to See You Soon, are just some of the cards you can find at your local Christian bookstore or online in my resource links below. Be sure to include the next big event date on each postcard.
    4. Step 4
      Banners and fliers.
An eye catching banner or flier will grab the attention of children and adults alike. Use banners to get recognition of your ministry name. I use Kidz J.A.M. in big colorful letters. Use the fliers to further promote what you’ve put on the large banner. Be specific and creative. If you don’t know how to use computer software to create banners and fliers; ask around your church. There are always people with knowledge ready to help, if you only ask for it. Your church secretary may be able to assist you in this area as well.
Fliers can be put up in many places. Local restaurants and stores usually have bulletin boards designated for community events. Your students can hand out fliers too. If you choose to hand out fliers in a public area, be sure to get the permission of the owner or manager.

    5. Step 5
Use community events to get the word out. A good event to have is a Fall Festival held on Halloween night. Always set up a registration table at the front of any event and give motivation to register such as a prize drawling from all completed registration cards. This will help you create a mailing list. You can use these events to hand out fliers too. Have plenty of banners and pictures of your class in view. You can use short skits by people or puppets to promote your children’s ministry. The possibilities are endless for ways to promote through events. A well put together program will give a great first impression of what your church has to offer children.
    6. Step 6
Create a mailing list. Always get addresses! 1st time visitors are a prime source; have parents fill out registration cards for their children. Get addresses at all your community events. Never pass up the opportunity to get a new address. Ask your church members to give addresses of their neighbors that have children. Once you have a mailing list, look for reasons to send out fliers and postcards. Remember, kids love to receive mail. Don’t forget your current students.
    7. Step 7
Use the media. Radio, Tv, News Papers, Community Calendars, they all offer some amount of exposure. This step can demand a large budget but the return could be very high as well. If you do not have the budget there are some things you can still do. Most newspapers will accept articles that are well written with a black and white photo. Write your article about an event that the church has done for the children and how it had a positive affect on the children and the community. If you get published it is more likely the newspaper will publish other articles of yours in the future. If you are not a writer, ask your church family for help, more then likely there is a writer among you.
Community Calendars are also free. Some run on local cable community access channels. Most Christian radio stations will announce your event for free. Because they are non profit, they can not sell commercial time. Check the stations website for their announcement board and post your event or call the station to give them the information they will need.

Game: Helping Children Find God http://kidsministryresource.com/index.php/2018/04/12/game-helping-children-find-god/ Thu, 12 Apr 2018 00:15:07 +0000 http://kidsministryresource.com/?p=40 Sunday school teachers are always looking for new game ideas to use in children’s church.  “Find God” is a new game created to help children understand that God is always there. This game will be fun and exciting for the kids as they search for God. This article will provide Children’s Ministers and teachers the basic instructions on how to play the game and give some ideas on the lessons that can be taught along with it.

For the purpose of this game God is represented by a  softball or other small object.

Find God is a game in which the Sunday school class will search for a hidden object (God).

Choose an area to play  the game.  You will need a space that has many hiding places (for instance: I use all the classes in the Sunday school department).

Show the object to the students and announce to them they will be  playing a very exciting game;

they will get to Find God.  Make sure that the children are not in the area that “God” will be hidden.

Have an assistant hide the object.

Get the kids ready to play the game.  When you say “Go” they will search for the object.

Let the children know that the one that finds God will get a special prize and will also get to hide God for the next game.  You can play this game over as many times as you choose.

When the game has ended, reassemble the children for a lesson.

Tell the children that the real God isn’t hiding.

Some lesson  topics to use with this game include:

Salvation (knowing and having a relationship with God)

Prayer  (communicate with God)

Creation (seeing God’s work)

Day at the Park Outreach http://kidsministryresource.com/index.php/2018/04/12/day-at-the-park-outreach/ Thu, 12 Apr 2018 00:07:56 +0000 http://kidsministryresource.com/?p=36 How to Reach the Community with a Sunday School Day at the Park

The church is commanded to “Go and make disciples.”  However, so many churches never do anything outside their own walls, this is Biblically wrong; we need to go where the lost are.  The Sunday School Day at the Park is designed to reach the community with the Gospel and help your church build a relationship with people in the neighborhood.  Spend some time in prayer about this event before planning this outreach ministry.

Get approval for the event, if needed. After that you will need to get members involved.  This event can only succeed with the commitment of several members of your church; all Sunday school teachers should be involved in some way.

Choose a date and park for the event and start planning well ahead of this date.

The park you choose should be one that has a lot going on and many visitors, a park with baseball and softball diamonds is a good choice.   Call your local park to see if there are any Little League games or tournaments going on, if there are they would be ideal days to pick for the Day at the Park outreach program; there will be many families there and all ages.

Plan what will take place at the event.

Here is a list of things you can do:

A free cook-out is a good place to start.  Hotdogs, and home-made side dishes are ideal and cost effective. (You will need a grill and a volunteer to operate it.)

Provide a craft table for preteen children. (You will need crafts, a table and a couple of volunteers to run it.)

Have some outdoor games for older kids (9-14yr old) (You will need volunteer game coordinators.)

Offer cold bottled water with your Church’s info place over the label.

Hold a drawing for a gas card and other items- this will allow you to collect information for a prospect list.

Do face painting.

Have a story station for younger children (3-5yr old) (You will need a volunteer story teller and a blanket set up under a tree.)

Promote the event.  Have an announcement in your local paper and put it on radio station community calendars, some stations will announce it free of charge.  Make fliers to put up and hand out around the neighborhood.  Make a sign or banner.  Use banners on the day of the event; put a banner at every entrance and right in front where the event is taking place.  Blank banners can be purchase fairly cheap, I find mine on eBay.  You can use paint or permanent markers on the banner.   Be sure to put FREE COOK-OUT on the banner, this will drawl a lot of you visitors.  If you don’t put dates and times on the banner, you can reuse them.

On the day of the event all of your volunteers should arrive early to set up and go ever what they are doing.

Instruct the volunteers to be friendly, introduce themselves and ask people if they attend a church. If the visitor does attend a church, thank them for joining you that day.  If the visitor does not attend church, try to engage in more conversation.  Ask them what they think about church.  The volunteers should not be pushy in conversation but always invite the person to your church….direct them to your information table if they seem interested.

Have fliers, tracts, business cards and any other church info that you would like to offer, have them out on a table for adults to take.

The cook-out should last about an hour and a half.  With set-up and clean-up the volunteers will be there 2-3 hrs.
