Children’s Bible Lesson for Valentine’s Day God’s Love for Us through Jesus
Objective:
To teach children that Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, and the greatest love of all is God’s love for us. The lesson will focus on understanding God’s love, how we can love others, and how love is an important part of God’s teachings.
Opening Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for loving us so much. Thank You for sending Jesus to show us what love is. Help us to love others just like You love us. Amen.”
Bible Story:
“The Greatest Commandment”
Scripture Reference: Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV)
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.'”
Lesson:
- Introduction:
- Ask the children what they think of when they hear the word “love.” Do they think of their family? Their friends? Valentine’s Day cards?
- Explain that love is a very special feeling, but the Bible tells us that God’s love is even greater than anything we can imagine.
- What is God’s Love Like?
- God loves us more than we can understand. He loves us unconditionally, meaning no matter what we do, God will always love us.
- Read the verse from Matthew 22:37-39. Jesus tells us that we should love God with all our hearts, minds, and souls. This means we should always remember how much God loves us and try our best to love Him back.
- Jesus also tells us to love others, just like we love ourselves. That means caring for others, helping them, and being kind, just like God is kind to us.
- Story Connection:
- Share a short story of Jesus showing love to others, such as when He healed the sick or helped the poor (Mark 1:40-42, Matthew 14:13-14).
- Emphasize that Jesus showed us the true meaning of love: selflessness, kindness, and caring for others.
- Activity – Heart Craft:
- Give each child a heart-shaped piece of paper or cardstock.
- Ask them to write or draw one thing they love about God (e.g., “God loves me,” “God made me,” “God is always with me”).
- Then, on the other side, have them write or draw one way they can show love to others (e.g., helping a friend, being kind, sharing with others).
- Let them decorate their hearts and talk about how they can show love like Jesus.

Memory Verse:
Matthew 22:37-39
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself.”
- Teach the children the memory verse by repeating it together a few times. Encourage them to remember it as a reminder to love God and others.
Application:
- Discuss how they can show love to others, just like God loves them. Ask questions like:
- “What can you do to show love to your family?” (e.g., helping at home, saying kind words)
- “How can you show love to your friends?” (e.g., sharing, playing nicely)
- “How can you show love to people you don’t know?” (e.g., smiling, saying something kind)
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, thank You for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to show us how to love. Help us to love You with all our hearts and to love others just like You love us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Valentine’s Day Cards:
To end the lesson, you can have the children make Valentine’s Day cards that include their memory verse and a picture of how they can show love. They can take these home and give them to someone special, sharing God’s love with others.
